Port Antonio beaches: some of the best in Jamaica

The white beaches of Port Antonio are among the most beautiful in Jamaica. Although this sleepy town is not as well known as the more popular areas like Negril or Ocho Rios, it has  been a secret, getaway for many celebrities looking forward to rest and seclusion. Actor Errol Flynn visited the town over 50 years ago, fell in love with the locale and bought a home on Navy Beach where he regularly entertained his famous friends. It was even featured in the 1988 Hollywood film “Cocktail” starring Tom Cruise.

Public beaches

Getting to the public beaches is easy. Some are free while others charge a small fee to spend the day. The great thing about these beaches is they don’t get as crowded as other Jamaican towns. It’s easier to find a spot on the beach and more opportunity to enjoy all of the fun water activities available.

The crystal-clear waters are a stunning sight. Enjoy a full day of sun and surf with the family. Grab a snack from a nearby jerk stand, and then take a dip in the warm, soothing water.

Clothing optional

Clothing optional or nude beaches are nothing new to the Caribbean. Although they are more popular in places like Negril, couples looking to go au naturel also have that option in Port Antonio.

You won’t find public nude beaches in Jamaica, but you will find private ones. Port Antonio has one small clothing optional beach where visitors can enjoy much more privacy than other locations on the island. If you’re traveling with small children you may decide to avoid these locations. It’s always a good idea to ask around to make sure you get to your desired destination.

Fun in the sun

Port Antonio’s beaches may be tame compared to others in Jamaica, but they have all the fun activities you’d find at any other exotic location. There is surfing, cruising diving, fishing snorkeling and sailing to enjoy. There are peaceful beaches with gentle surfs ideal for relaxing and lying in the sun. Of course you’ll also find beaches with impressing waves perfect for surfing or body boarding. Divers will find the water off Port Antonio remains relatively calm  making wall diving a popular activity.

Deep sea fishing is another sport that attracts hundreds of visitors to this tiny parish. Deep sea anglers come in search of tuna, kingfish, wahoo, and dolphin. It is also the location of the Blue Marlin Tournament.

More water fun

There are other areas of the island besides the coastline where you can enjoy water fun. The Blue Lagoon is a calm, deep green, watery pool where you can enjoy snorkeling, scuba diving and more water activities.

An island is the perfect vacation destination. Of course no island getaway is complete without a trip to the beach. You’ll find some of Jamaica’s most beautiful beaches in Port Antonio.
